island produce

on the finest local ingredients in this beautiful environment is one of Rona’s great treats.  You can choose to cook romantic dinners for two in your cottage or if you would like to enjoy a little company & craic, we run an informal supper club where you can meet your neighbours and perhaps a visiting yachtie or two – it’s your choice.

Rona’s culinary motto is ‘what we have’ and our list of island produce is steadily expanding. As well as being deliciously fresh, this also cuts down on the amount of food you need to bring with you – we’ll email you the week before your holiday with a list of what’s available, and put it into your cottage for arrival. Supplement this with what you catch or forage; Seafood, wild rhubarb & mint, sorrel and wild mushrooms to name a few ingredients, together with Rona free range eggs and seasonal vegetables & salads – and that’s a delicious meal prepared from ‘what we have’.

The star ingredient is Rona venison. With the herd steadily increasing and production now in full swing, we are working towards a continuous supply of meat all year round.  We do encourage everyone to try Rona venison – especially if you have had a bad experience elsewhere, because we believe the combination of Rona’s environment and Bill’s expertise result in an outstanding product.  The venison is fresh frozen after being processed in our own island larder, and freezer packs are available to take home with you in insulated boxes so you can enjoy the taste of Rona back at home.

Younger visitors can get involved too: a fun way of engaging kids with nature, their food & where it comes from is to come with Mum & Dad on a ‘Sausage stalking’ expedition’. Join Bill on a wee walk to try & spot  the deer, and if we have venison mince available, help him make your own recipe sausages to take home.

If you favour surf over turf, we’ve got that covered too: the estate launch MV Rona, is a ‘hobby’ fishing boat with a small fleet of creels for our own seafood –  trips can be arranged to help Bill haul in the catch, with fresh langoustine, squat lobsters and crab available for your own fine dining in the cottage.  If you would like to learn about seafood preparation, Bill will run demonstrations and you can join us to prepare & enjoy a seafood meal.  Kids love fishing too and it’s fascinating to see the starfish, octopus and sea urchins that can come up in the creels and examined before releasing back into the water.

Our food credentials were secured when Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall visited Rona to film the ‘Gone Fishing’ TV programme. During the visit, Bill treated the crew to some of his home-made oatcakes which have subsequently been featured in Hugh’s ‘Everyday’ cookbook – and which he can demonstrate on request!

We would love to share some of your recipes that use Rona produce too, so if you devised something delicious during your stay, do send in a recipe and we can put it on our website & include it in the files we have put into the cottages for others to share.
